
Personal Statement
I am a social epidemiologist specializing in inclusion, social justice, and social determinants of health. I have extensive work experience with government, academia, developmental partners, NGOs and the health system. I am currently an Associate Professor in the department of Community Health & Primary Care, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos, Nigeria involved in research, training and service provision with extensive experience in community-based, facility and household-based surveys. I provide mentorship to junior faculty, postgraduate students and undergraduate students in my institution. I have attended several training sessions, workshops and conferences nationally and internationally during my academic career. I have over 55 publications in peer review journals. I was a principal investigator on 2 NIH grants, co-investigator on several other grants sponsored by various local and international agencies and co-convener addressing global health inequalities for LGBTQ+ communities workshop hosted by the University of Birmingham United Kingdom in 2023.
I am the Inclusion and diversity representative for University of Lagos on the AFRETEC Network, as well as the team lead for the University of Lagos “Inclusivity, Equality and Diversity (IED) team” made up of a multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral team (IED team) working with various stakeholders within the society to address inequity in health and education. As a team we collaborated successfully to host two national conferences bringing health, education and other SDG related issues affecting SGM within mainstream discussion. As a consultant to ministries and developmental partners, I participated in the development of several documents relevant to the health and development of Nigerians including the National Private Sector Engagement Strategy for Family Planning in Nigeria; the comprehensive sexuality education curriculum and training manual for out of school youths in Lagos state; training manual for state Emergency Maternal Child Health Intervention Centre (SEMCHIC) program managers; training manual and participants guide on HIV, TB and Malaria for primary healthcare workers in Nigeria.
