About the Department of Anatomic & Molecular Pathology
The Department was known as the Department of Morbid Anatomy for many years until January, 2012 when it became known as the Department of Anatomic and Molecular Pathology to reflect the introduction of molecular diagnostics into the services rendered by the department.
Prof Eugene O. Odunjo was the first Nigerian to assume the role of Professor and Head of the department. Since then, the department has enjoyed the intellectual contributions of eminent scholars such as Prof. V.P.N Mordi, Dr Isaac Olude and Prof S. O. Elesha. The department presently has 4 Professors, Prof C. C. Anunobi (HOD), Prof Adekunbiola A. F. Banjo, Prof Fatimah B. Abdulkareem and Prof Adetola O. Daramola. The other lecturers include Prof. K. B. Badmos, Dr. N. A. Awolola, Dr. M. O. Odubanjo, Dr. O. Dawodu and Dr. N. O Orah.
Grants and Research
These lecturers in collaboration with local and foreign researchers have variously attracted local and international grants and published many high profile research findings. Many laboratory based collaborative research works are currently ongoing in the department.
Diagnostic Services Provided by the Department
The department is responsible for interpretation of histologic findings involving animal studies. Such requests come as project works from undergraduate and postgraduate students and other researchers.
Most of the lecturers are also honorary consultants to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Their areas of expertise/special interest are indicated in parentheses after their names. They are Prof C. C. Anunobi (Urological Pathology), Prof A. A. F. Banjo, (Female Genital Tract Pathology and Cytopathology)Prof F. B. Abdulkareem, (Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology) Prof A. O. Daramola (Breast Pathology and Oncology), Dr M. O. Odubanjo (Renal Pathology and genitourinary Oncology) and Prof. K. B. Badmos (Gatrointestinal Pathology, Cytopathology), Dr. N. A. Awolola (Gastrointestinal & Liver Pathology), Dr. Olayemi Dawodu (Female Genital and Endocrine Pathology) and Dr. N. O. Orah,(Molecular & Autopsy Pathology).
The department renders quality diagnostics services in cytopathology, surgical pathology and autopsy pathology.
The department’s surgical pathology service is responsible for the diagnostic sign out of an average of three thousand (3000) biopsies yearly. The department also has one of the busiest autopsy diagnostic services in the country with an average of four-six post mortems requested and perform daily.
Department of Anatomic and Molecular pathology of LUTH pioneered the use of liquid based cytology for gynecological cytology in Nigeria using the liquid-pre system of LGM international Inc., Florida, USA.
Liquid based cytology has been proven to have significant advantages over conventional Pap Smear in the detection of epithelial cell abnormalities. It also has the advantages of allowing for reflex or further tests with IHC or molecular methods without the need for the collection of additional samples. We offer HPV screening using molecular methods on luqui-PREP specimens.
