Apart from teaching the Medical and Dental students for whom the College of Medicine was initially founded, the Department is heavily involved in the teaching of Postgraduate students since the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Lagos in 1982. So far, we have graduated over 500 Master of Science (M.Sc.)\u00a0degree holders and over40 Ph.D\u00a0candidates. Today, we contribute to the training of several categories of students including Nurses and Midwives, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Science Laboratory Technologists, as well as professional candidates such as Public Health Officers, Public Health Doctors (Masters Degree), Fellows of the National Postgraduate Medical College and The West African College of Physicians. We also have administrative and Technical staff who are the supporting staff in the Department.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Students from other Universities undergo industrial training in the Department, along data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Department offers Postgraduate programmes leading to M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D degrees in:<\/p><ol><li>Medical Microbiology.<\/li><li>Medical Parasitology.<\/li><\/ol><p>The objectives of the programmes are to provide intensive training in Medical Bacteriology, Medical Parasitology, Medical Mycology, Medical Virology and Immunology leading to the award of postgraduate degrees (M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D) in Medical Microbiology or Medical Parasitology.<\/p><p><strong>GENERAL COURSE CONTENT:<\/strong><\/p><p>Our taught courses are in five major areas. These are:<\/p><ul><li>Bacteriology (bacteria of medical importance).<\/li><li>Medical Parasitology (parasites and entomology of medical importance).<\/li><li>Mycology (fungi of medical importance).<\/li><li>Immunology (host immune response to infection, immunopathology of infection, immune diseases, vaccines, immunodiagnosisetc).<\/li><li>Virology (viruses of medical importance).<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Degree Awarded<\/strong><\/p><ol><li><strong>MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.)<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>A, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Microbiology.<\/p><p>B, Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Parasitology<\/p><p>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Admission Requirements:<\/strong><\/p><ol><li><strong>Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Microbiology (Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology and Immunology Options)<\/strong>. The programme is opened to graduates with good honours degree from the University of Lagos or other accredited Universities in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Cell Biology and Genetics, Biology, Medicine (MBBS) and Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with a heavy bias towards the appropriate area in which the student wishes to obtain the M.Sc. degree.<\/li><li><strong>Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Parasitology.<\/strong>\u00a0The programme is opened to graduates with good honours degree from the University of Lagos or other accredited Universitiesin Microbiology, Zoology, Applied Entomology\/Parasitology, Medical Laboratory Science, Cell Biology and Genetics, Biology, Medicine (MBBS) and Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with a heavy bias towards the appropriate area in which the student wishes to obtain the M.Sc. degree.<\/li><\/ol><p>(b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Degree Requirements<\/strong><\/p><p>To obtain an M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology or Medical Parasitology, candidate<\/p><p>Must satisfy a minimum of 26 units made up as follows:<\/p><ol><li>20 units of the compulsory courses and 6 units from the optional courses<\/li><\/ol><p>ii\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Satisfy all other requirements as stipulated in the regulations of the School\u00a0 of Postgraduate Studies.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Phil)<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><strong>Admission Requirements<\/strong><\/p><p>The M. Phil programme shall be opened to candidates having:<\/p><ol><li>A bachelor\u2019s degree or equivalent in Microbiology\/Parasitology with a minimum<\/li><\/ol><p>of\u00a0\u00a0 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0class (Upper).<\/p><ol><li>ii. An M.Sc. or equivalent in Medical Microbiology or Medical Parasitology.<\/li><\/ol><p>iii.
