Personal Statement

Over the years, I have studied the regeneration of spermatocytes following testicular assaults using rat models and have been able to identify herbal therapies that could ameliorate the deleterious effects of testicular gonadal toxicants.

Following the scourge of HIV infection in Africa and particularly Nigeria, the rollout of HIV care and treatment services as well as the WHO’s “test and treat” guideline has enabled many people living with HIV (PLHV) to start antiretroviral therapy (ART) early. However, a lot of possible side effects that could trail this lifelong therapy is still very much neglected. Hence, I began to study the impact of ART as single therapy and as combined therapy (cART) on the brain and reproductive health. My long-term goal is to improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes in PLHV who desire procreation and have the right to do so and by extension contribute to the UNAIDS core principle of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, at all ages), and to the AIDS response, that “no one should be left behind”.
