About the Department Of Biomedical Engineering

This is where the synergy happens between multiple engineering disciplines and medical sciences by the application of engineering principles to improve quality of life and healthcare delivery. We train engineers at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to be capable of transnational research and applications, using modern teaching and research approaches. As our department evolves, our goal is to make specific and significant impact in developing innovative point-of-care medical devices, and expanding the research frontiers in bionics, bio-materials and tissue engineering, bioinformatics, bio-mechanics, drug delivery & Nano-medicine, and medical artificial intelligence. 

The Department of Biomedical Engineering University of Lagos has evolved over the years from a Biomedical Engineering unit at the College of Medicine through a collaboration with the University of Liverpool since 1981/82. The unit took care of repairs and maintenance of engineering facilities and installations within the college and had a brief period of training Biomedical engineering technologists. It also took care of internet service and the Medical ICT skills acquisition for the entire College until a new unit was carved out for these functions. 

As a department of the Faculty of Basic medical sciences, it provided teaching support to other departments in the faculty. In 2009/2010 academic session, the department floated postgraduate diploma (PGD) and Masters degrees (MSc) programs in Biomedical Engineering through the School of postgraduate studies. Faculty members from the faculties of Engineering and Basic medical sciences have since been involved in teaching and research in these programs. In the year 2017, the undergraduate B.Sc. Degree program in Biomedical Engineering commenced in the University of Lagos. The University decided to domicile Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. 

Entry requirements for undergraduates  remains the same as with all other engineering programs in the faculty of Engineering but with an additional requirement of a credit in Biology at O’level.  

The department operates in both the Faculty of engineering and Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in the College of medicine so that students can have the needed exposure to the medical environment in the course of their training.

Our goal is to produce graduates that are resourceful, creative, knowledgeable and able to perform the following functions:

  1. Innovate products and production techniques for healthcare industry 
  2. Design and implement bioengineering components, machines, equipment and systems for healthcare industry. 
  3. Install and maintain complex biomedical engineering systems so that they can perform optimally in our environment. 
  4. Adapt and adopt exogenous technology in order to solve local biomedical engineering challenges. 
  1. Exercise original thought, have good professional judgment and be able to take responsibility for the direction of important tasks. 
  2. Manage people, fund, materials and equipment. 
  3. Improve on indigenous technology to enhance local problem solving capability.

Our vision is to build future generations of researchers and professionals who have been trained in interdisciplinary teams that bridge the gap between engineering and the biomedical sciences, resulting in better medical technologies for improved healthcare and quality of life of healthy individuals.
