Welcome to Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutic and Toxicology
I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Pharmacology Therapeutics and Toxicology College of Medicine University of Lagos, the University of First Choice and the Nations pride.
Pharmacology is defined as the scientific study of drugs in living organisms. Pharmacology as a discipline is both a basic and clinical science, having two major branches: Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics which are, in simple terms respectively described as the way the body handles an administered drug and the way the drug affects the body.
The Department which was established as a fully-fledged Department in 1970, was re-designated as the Department of Pharmacology Therapeutics and Toxicology in 2013, is involved in the training of Pharmacology students from the undergraduate level to the doctoral level. The Department also trains Medical and Dental Students, Pharmacy, Physiology, Nursing, Radiography, Medical Laboratory Science and Physiotherapy Students. Furthermore, the Department is actively involved in the teaching of Therapeutics to the Master of Public Health students as well as students of the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African Postgraduate Medical College. Our programme is designed to be exciting and demanding and at the same time supportive and flexible enough to meet the specific needs and interest of the students and their mentors
Our products are competent professionals who are well grounded in drug discovery and development, herbal drug research, safe and rational drug use to mention a few. They therefore contribute immensely to manpower development in Nigeria and abroad.

About the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutic and Toxicology
The Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology was established as a division of the Department of Physiological Sciences headed by Professor F.O. Dosekun at the inception of the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1962. It became a separate full-fledged Department in 1970 headed by Dr. L.I.L. Ndika and had since been involved in the training of Medical (MBBS) and Dental (BDS) students. The Department had also been teaching Pharmacology to students undergoing the Nursing, Post-basic Nursing and Fellowship of National Postgraduate Medical College programmes.
In 1980, the Department started the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programme in Pharmacology and taught the Pharmacology curriculum for Pharmacy and Physiology students. The Academic and Technical staff of the Department were also involved in the training of Science Laboratory Technology students of the University of Lagos at the time. The Department had academic staff strength of 4 in 1970 and this had varied at different times. Between 1980 and 1998, the Department was designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine.
In 2015, the Department’s name was changed to Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology towards meeting the needs of the society. Apart from Dr. L.I.L. Ndika, the Department had been headed at various periods by Prof. A. Tella, Prof. S.O.A. Bamgbose, Prof. A.F.B. Mabadeje, Prof. A.O. Onabanjo, Prof. A. Akintonwa, Dr. R.B. Ashorobi, Prof. O.O. Adeyemi, Prof. E.O. Agbaje, Prof. S.O. Olayemi, and Prof. I.A. Oreagba. The Department has won many awards within and outside the University. Many staff have won International Awards, Fellowships and Scholarships e.g. IUPHAR, TWAS, TWAS-DFG, Visiting Fulbright Scholar Program, NIH/Fogarty, Young Investigators ETF AST&D, CV Raman, International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), International Society of Neuroscience Fellowship/Awards etc. Many research grants and equipment endowments have been attracted by members of staff of the Department.
The Department currently has fourteen (14) Academic Staff [5 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 2 Senior Lecturer, 3 Lecturer I, 2 Lecturer II], five (5) Technologists, and three (3) Administrative Officers. The current Head of Department is Professor Abidemi .J. Akindele
